Griffith glad to grab title
Toronto- Barbadian Chris
Griffith is pleased that a difficult season for him has ended in a jockeys'
championship title at the Fort Erie season.
Griffith rode a remarkable 11 winners in the season's last three days to capture
the jockeys' title with 94 winners, beating long-time ( season ) leader Doug
Gibbons ( 91 ).
"It's been a real up and down year, and it's very gratifying that I managed to pull
it off," said Griffith, who suffered injuries from two spills, and
also missed several race days because of two suspensions for riding infringements.
"I missed about 17 days ( out of 100 ) and it was pretty hard to come back from being
so far down, especially the last three days," said Griffith on the CANA
SPORT radio programme.
"Going into the last weekend I was still five or six behind and those last three days
were really unbelievable. I got some live horses and everything worked out fine,"said
Griffith, who is now riding at Woodbine for the remaining six weeks of
the season, and may travel to Philadelphia Park for a stint there in the new year.
" A lot of people took notice and hopefully it can get me on some better horses and I
can go from there."
In the meantime, Griffith, who won the 1996 ( Cockspur )
Gold Cup in Barbados with Rambrino, is not sure his commitments there
will allow him to return home for the big ( Sandy Lane ) Gold Cup in
March.
"Barbados - the first Saturday in March - is always the place to,
and if I can get a decent horse to ride, I would be more than happy to be there, but if
it's not going to be worth my while then it wouldn't make sense," Griffith
said.
And Griffith will be happy to return to the Fort Erie season next year in spite of the
attraction of the more prestigious and lucrative Woodbine racing.
"As it is right now, I plan on going back to Fort Erie. Most of the people have been
loyal to me and it's hard to leave when you are doing good."
Griffith also spoke with pride about the prominence of Caribbean riders in Canada, pointing to Trinidadian Emile Ramsammy -
leading the standings by more than 20 winners nearing the end of the season.
"Emile is in all likelihood going to be leading rider at Woodbine.
We've got both tracks in Ontario covered. The guys are doing well. We are very notice-able
now," Griffith said. ( CANA)
